島宿 栞

Shima-yado Shiori

A bookmark in your days, a surrender to island time.

Challenge

An inn on an island. The sound of waves, the scent of salt air, time moving at its own unhurried pace. The values that wash over you the moment you set foot there had to be communicated to a first-time visitor through a website alone. A list of photos and facility specs cannot carry the inn’s true essence — the way time flows here.

Approach

We distilled the brand concept into a single metaphor: “placing a bookmark in your days.” Copy, typography, white space, the tone of every photograph — everything was aligned to one sensation: quietly stopping time, like turning a page.

The scent of the tide dissolves into the breeze, waves murmur in the distance. Here, time moves a little differently. Like turning the pages of a book, the days you knew until yesterday quietly fall away. Listen to the waves, and the heart, too, begins to sway in stillness. This is a place to slip a bookmark into your days and surrender to island time.

As a web experience, scroll speed, the breathing room between sections, and the rhythm of the typesetting were all tuned to the inn’s sense of time. The act of browsing the site itself was designed to be the act of placing a bookmark.

Concept

The name Shiori (栞) means bookmark in Japanese — an object that marks where you paused and promises you can return. We extended this metaphor across the entire brand: staying at this inn is not a trip to escape the everyday, but a moment of pausing inside it, folding down the corner of a page you want to remember.

The visual language follows accordingly. A quiet serif, restrained color palette, photography that lingers rather than dazzles. Nothing that shouts. Everything that stays.
